In the beginning, God entrusted humanity with the sacred duty to care for creation (Genesis 2:15). Instead of stewardship, we have chosen exploitation. Today, Africa bears the scars of this betrayal. Between 2021 and 2025, the continent endured some of its deadliest climate years: droughts displaced millions, with over 178 million people directly impacted, an estimated 81% of Africa’s population. Dried riverbeds, shrinking lakes like Lake Chilwa in Malawi, and rising hunger reveal not just environmental loss but deep social and spiritual crises.

Prophetic witness means the Church stands outward-looking, advocating for both environmental integrity and human well-being. In a world where climate change is now the greatest moral and ethical challenge of our age, the Church cannot afford silence.

Climate change affects people of God, that’s why it matters to God. To be Church today is to embody this same prophetic witness, raising a voice for truth, accountability, and systemic transformation. Charity alone is not enough. We must challenge structures that perpetuate poverty, inequality, and climate destruction.

As people of faith, we demand:

  1. Justice for the most vulnerable: communities already displaced, farmers who have lost crops, and children who inherit drought.

  2. Intergenerational equity: Decisions today must secure tomorrow’s livelihoods. To do otherwise is to sin against future generations.
